In January 2010 Aya was awarded the People's Choice entry by the 100% Pure New Zealand Your Big Break Competition in which she was provided with the funds, crew, and cast to shoot her original three-minute short to capture the spirit of New Zealand. After returning to the States, she completed another short "Mrs. Kim" which was a finalist in the Los Angeles Magazine film competition. She has since been hired by UCLA and the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation to create seven short documentaries on the US public education system.
